Smoothies... an excuse to eat what tastes suspiciously like dessert, as a legitimate breakfast item. There seem to be waves of smoothy crazes that go through the generations and I would suggest we are amidst one right now. Debates about Vitamix vs Ninja's rage around the vegan potluck tables and alliances are made amongst those on team 'hand blender' vs 'team counter top blender'.
A lot of the craze with smoothies seem to revolve around the 'super food' additives that are the latest rage. Deciding to go all in (for the sake of recipe research of course!) this fine specimen has 4 'super food' additions to its already nutrient packed glass. Whether you are on the smoothy train or not, adding even one a week can be not only a way to add a boost of energy and health benefiting foods into your weekly diet, but it can also be extremely practical when on a busy schedule.
So what makes this so super? Chia Seeds, Hemp Hearts, Lucuma Powder and Cacao Nibs.
There are a LOT of health claims for all four of these and it can be easy to get carried away by the latest report of their miracle abilities so lets stick to a few basic facts that support adding these to your diet.
Chia Seeds are a great nutrient dense food with high levels of Omega-3's, magnesium, manganese, calcium, fibre and protein all while having a low caloric number. Hemp Hearts biggest claim to fame is that they are packed with Omega 3 and 6 as well as essential fatty acids which are great for reducing inflammation. Raw Cacao is one of the best sources of magnesium, essential for healthy nerve and muscle function, we can get from food. It is also surprisingly high in iron, and gives you a natural energy boost from the Phenylethylamine (PEA) and Anandamide in it. Lucuma powder is not only great for its antioxidants and high levels of B vitamins, but because it is a fruit (dried and turned into powder) it a great sugar replacement in your smoothy if you need that extra sweet kick. Low on the glycemic index and with a distinct caramel, maple flavour it is perfect for pairing with the bitter richness of the Cacao!
This particular recipe has become a staple in our house every morning for about a month, but with fruit season upon us it may soon get replaced by something more peachy keen any day now! In reality there is no 'recipe' for a smoothy, just toss some things into a blender and taste as you go! So get creative and get on the blender band wagon!

People often ask me what my cooking 'style' is and I always struggle to explain it because it is so broad. The best summary is that I will cook anything as long as it is delicious, healthy and wholesome. That means free of chemicals, preservatives, additives, and byproducts. It also means everything in moderation, just because coconut oil is healthy does not mean we should add it to everything! Just because honey is a sugar does not mean we can not have it once in a while! You will not find any dry, bland, cardboard reminiscent food here, healthy can still be crave worthy! There is everything from gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, organic, local, and season recipes here, I hope you find something tempting!
